Observation - December 5th, 2020, Saturday

The floorboards are creaking above me

A reminder that I do not really live alone

Kitty is curled up in a ball on the couch

I hear the deep rumble of engine outside

Small branches swaying in the light breeze

Dark slender finger, against the pale sky

There is laughter somewhere down the block

People are walking outside, riding bikes

There is no snow on the ground, no ice

It is warm for Minneapolis in December

Observation - October 5th, 2020, Monday

The air is warm this morning

Unseasonably warm for October

My windows are open

And Kitty is talking about rabbits

In the quiet morning

Beneath the cool blue sky

The sun still below the horizon

As Venus fades quickly in the light

Observation - September 5th, 2020, Saturday

The long September sunlight reflects off the sandstone and red brick of the building across the street, filtering back through the green leaves of the maple outside my window.

The window is open; there is traffic on Bryant and a rhythm to the sound of tires on pavement, as car after car rolls by; Kitty is sleeping on the ledge by the sill, curled up on her side.

I see patches of blue sky through the limbs of the tree.

The air in the apartment is cool.

There scent of cinnamon and cloves lingers in the air, I made eggrolls.

Observation - August 5th, 2020, Wednesday

The scent of garlic and curry the apartment

I made a pot of lentils

For the first time in weeks the air conditioner is silent

The windows are open for a cross breeze

A dappled light comes in through the east windows

Filtered through the green leaves

Kitty is complaining about the taste of medicine in her food

The dry and dusty chondroitin that helps her with her joints

Observation - July 5th, 2020, Saturday

It is late in the afternoon

In the condo all the shades are drawn down

The unwelcome sun is beating

Hard on the bricks and brownstone

The air conditioner fills the empty space

Cool air and ambient noise

Kitty is curled up and sleeping

Observation - May 5th, 2020, Tuesday

It is a bright morning

There is a plane flying overhead, though the city is quiet

There is a robin chirping in the tree outside my window

My lady is working at loom, weaving on a hoop

Kitty is begging for butter

Seventy thousand Americans will have died

From complications due to COVID-19

By the end of today

The news is increasingly grim

There are politicians telling us to prepare

Be ready to lose more

Americans must be ready to sacrifice

Like they did in World War II

This time we march into the jaws of a faceless beast

To feed an economy, that is hungry for our lives

As valuable as kibble, scattered on the floor

Observation - March 5th, 2020, Thursday

It is 5:27 in the morning

Kitty is yowling for attention

She is unhappy with the food in her dish

She wants something different

Something fresh

She doesn’t want the supplement I give her

To strengthen her joints, and her back legs

She is seventeen and getting arthritic

She wants to play

She cannot jump anymore

She does not like to play string

While laying on the floor

I lift her to the window

So she can watch the dark street

Observation - February 5th, 2020, Wednesday

It is chilly outside, but not cold for February

The sun is shining through a cloud filled sky

Pale patches of blue speak of an early spring

Kitty is sleeping by the window as I write

I am listening to the news, it is a sad day

Donald Trump is to be acquitted of his crimes

America has become a lawless place, maybe

It always was a place of deep divisions

Where the laws are applied differently

On behalf of the rich and against the poor

Maybe nothing has changed at all, America

Is just naked now, reveling in all its flaws

Observation - September 4th, 2019, Wednesday

Kitty is speaking to me

She wants to know where her taste of butter is

Her meow is simultaneously a question and a complaint

She moves of her perch by the window

Crosses the carpet to where I sit at my desk

She nudges me, to get me up

To go to the kitchen and lift the lid on the dish where

The stick of soft butter rests

Dab my finger into it and return

She has taken her spot on the arm of the couch

The place she receives her daily treats

She is speaking to me

It took you long enough is what I hear in her meow

She licks the butter from my finger tip

Lays down to clean her paws

Observation - August 4th, 2019, Sunday

Observation

There is soft light coming through the windows

Cool air after an evening of rain

Sparrows chatter in elms

Kitty looks out the window and day dreams

A motorcycle rumbles down Bryant

The news is filled with tragedies

It is of angry white-men murdering dozens of people

Terrorism in Texas and Ohio

It the two hundred and sixteenth day of the year

Two hundred and fifty mass-shooting

With no end in sight

Twenty-nine dead and dozens hurt

Each shooting took a matter of seconds

The world turns, the light in Minnesota is soft the air is cool

Sparrows chatter in the elms

Kitty listens and watches the morning traffic on the avenue

Observation - June 4th, 2019, Tuesday

There is the soft light of morning in late spring

The solstice is approaching, summer will soon be in full swing

A bus rumbles by the window, the number 4, rolling down Bryant

The noise filters in through the window screen, with a cool breeze.

Kitty licks a spot of butter from her paw

A dog is barking on his morning walk

People are stirring on their way to work

The birds have grown quiet for the rush hour

Thursday, April 4, 2019

Observation - Thursday, April 4th

Observation

It is still dark outside
It is quiet on Bryant
The bus just rolled by, high pitched engine
Breaking up the silence
Kitty stirring beneath her blanket on couch
Under the orange and white stripped tent
I make for her in the morning
She thinks she is a cave lion

Monday, March 4, 2019

Observation - March 4th, 2019, Monday

The coffee pot is gurgling
The news is playing clips
The president making a fool of himself
Cursing on TV, lying

The five o’clock bus passes by
It is cold outside, negative 10
My lady is preparing to leave for work
Kitty is following her around

Monday, February 4, 2019

Observation - February 4th, 2019, Monday

There is a knocking sound coming from the refrigerator

I listen to the heavy breathing of my cat

Curled up behind me on the couch

Resting on her white blanket

Maybe she knows I am writing about her

She lifts her head up and squints

Maybe it is the noise coming from the kitchen

The knocking noises mimic the scurrying of mice

Random, faint, clicks and scratches

Like a voice calling to kitty

Get up and play.

Observation - January 4th, 2019, Friday

Observation

My lady tells me about her dreams

Playing string with Kitty, pouncing

The smell of coffee fills the house

In the dark morning, dressing, typing

I am listening, chatting with them

In the hour before sunrise

Monday, December 3, 2018

Observation - December 3rd, 2018, Monday

Observation

The world outside my window is covered in ice and snow

We are plunging into winter, and it is cold

I woke up parched, with the radiators drying out the house

Running hot all day, non-stop

Kitty is curled up in a ball on the couch

She slept under my arm all night

She is complaining about the snowy-world

With all the rabbits and the squirrels having gone to rest

Saturday, November 3, 2018

Observation - November 3rd, 2018, Saturday

Observation

It is the 6th hour of the third day of the eleventh month
There is traffic on the street in the cool November dark
It will be brighter at this hour tomorrow, saving daylight
My kitty does not read a clock, she has one inside her
Tick-tocking with the rapid beat of her kitten’s heart
She is curled up on the couch and I listen to her breathing

Monday, September 3, 2018

Observation - September 3rd, 2018, Monday

Observation

I listen to a car roll by outside my open window
The sound of traffic is low, I have not noticed any busses
There is a beeping like an alarm going off at the nursing home across the street
Or of a van backing up, but it has been going off for hours
It is Labor Day today and the city is still sleeping

Summer is coming to an end

It promises to be warm today, not hot, the breeze is cool and dry
Kitty is running from window to window, chortling in her brisk meow
There is something happening outside
A born squirrel, or a chip monk in the tree
They vanish, and she grows quiet

Friday, August 3, 2018

Observation - August 3rd, 2018, Friday

There is traffic on Bryant
The windows are open
The sound of tires

Cars and trucks and busses

Cleaning her tawny head

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Observation - July 3rd, 2018, Tuesday

Observation

Kitty stretches her front paw
A sparrow cut across the plane of view from the front window
Cool clear light bends through the wavy glass

It is quiet in the morning
The cup filled with coffee is warm in my hand
A breeze on my neck from the black plastic fan
